Bose Ultra Open vs QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds: Which to Buy?

Quick answer

Choose Bose Ultra Open Earbuds if you need situational awareness during workouts or outdoor activities; choose Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen) if you want immersive noise cancellation for commuting or focused listening.

Trade-offs to consider

• Sound isolation vs. awareness: QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds seal the ear for immersive noise cancelling; Ultra Open Earbuds keep ear canals open so you hear ambient sound naturally. Choose based on whether you need to block out or stay tuned in to your environment.
• Comfort and fit for activity: Ultra Open Earbuds clip onto the ear without inserting anything into the canal, reducing fatigue during long runs or gym sessions. QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds rely on ear tips that create a secure seal, which some find less comfortable during vigorous movement. If you plan to use earbuds primarily for workouts, the open-ear design may feel more stable and breathable.
• Battery and features: Both models support Bluetooth multipoint and Bose Immersive Audio, but the QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen) add improved call processing and CustomTune personalized sound. The Ultra Open Earbuds focus on delivering spatial audio without sacrificing ambient awareness. For frequent callers or those who want the latest noise-cancelling tech, the QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds offer more tailored features.
