Compare the Lenovo 500e Yoga Gen 4 and 100e Chromebook Gen 4. We break down the trade-offs between a convertible touchscreen and a standard clamshell for students.
Quick answer
Choose the Lenovo 500e Yoga Gen 4 if you need a versatile 2-in-1 with a larger, higher-resolution touchscreen for note-taking and presentations. Choose the Lenovo 100e Chromebook Gen 4 for a more affordable, durable clamshell with double the RAM for smoother multitasking on a budget.
Key differences at a glance
The Lenovo 500e Yoga Gen 4 is a convertible 2-in-1, meaning it can flip into tent, stand, or tablet modes. Its 12.2" 1920x1200 display offers more screen real estate and sharper detail than the 100e's 11.6" screen. The 100e Chromebook Gen 4, however, is a traditional clamshell laptop, which often feels sturdier on a desk and is slightly lighter to carry.
The most important spec difference is memory. The 500e Yoga comes with 4GB of RAM, while the 100e Chromebook has 8GB. Both have soldered memory, so you cannot upgrade later. For Chrome OS, 4GB is fine for basic tasks like web browsing and Google Docs, but 8GB makes a noticeable difference when you have multiple tabs, extensions, or Android apps open.
Trade-offs to consider
- Form factor: Convertible vs Clamshell: The 500e Yoga's 360-degree hinge lets you use it as a laptop, tablet, or tent for presentations. The 100e's standard clamshell is simpler and often more rigid, but you cannot use it as a tablet. If you take handwritten notes or often present to small groups, the 500e's convertible design is a clear win.
- Memory: 4GB vs 8GB: The 500e Yoga has 4GB of RAM, while the 100e Chromebook has 8GB. Both are soldered and non-upgradable. With 4GB, you may experience lag with many tabs open. 8GB provides a smoother experience for heavier multitasking. For students who run many browser tabs or use Android/Linux apps, the 100e's 8GB is the better choice despite the smaller screen.
- Display size and resolution: The 500e Yoga offers a 12.2" 1920x1200 display, which is larger and sharper than the 100e's standard 11.6" 1366x768 panel. This makes the 500e better for detailed work and media consumption. If screen clarity and size matter most, the 500e Yoga is the pick, even with its RAM trade-off.
