XLR or USB?

XLR microphones are analog devices that require an XLR cable that feeds the analog signal to an audio interface. The interface then converts the analog signal to digital and feeds the audio to your PC for recording. Within USB microphones, all of the analog to digital conversion takes place within the microphone - no audio interface required. The digital signal is then fed via USB connection directly into your PC.

Condenser Microphones

How Do They Capture Sound?

Typical condenser microphones use a lightweight membrane/diaphragm and a fixed plate that act as a capacitor. Sound pressure causes this thin membrane to move. This movement changes the capacitance of the circuit creating an electrical signal. The signal is then captured through your recording device or amplified by a powered speaker.

Condenser Mic Characteristics:

Extremely sensitive - picks up the subtlest sounds in any environment

Very articulate audio with a detailed high-frequency capture

Customer Reviews (4.8 / 5 · 5 reviews)

Henry G. ★★★★★

The side-address design makes positioning it for vocals so much easier, and the cardioid pattern really isolates my voice from room noise. It picked up the warmth in my acoustic guitar beautifully during a quick recording session.

Chloe U. ★★★★★

Swapped my old dynamic mic for this and the difference in clarity is night and day, especially for vocals. The cardioid pickup pattern does a great job rejecting room noise, and the build quality feels solid enough for daily podcasting.

Timothy B. ★★★★★

The side-address design made positioning it for my vocal booth so much easier than my old mic. Picked up my acoustic guitar with zero handling noise, and the clarity in the midrange is exactly what I needed.
